Shark hunt By Nate Griffioen

Words cant describe what we just did to take two Blacktip sharks. On our drive down to Alabama, we pictured driving a boat a few miles out and tossing out chum waiting for a shark to come into the bait. I could have not been more wrong. Billy, C.E.O of Americanbowfishing.com who had been there a few days prior to our arrival said; "man its hard, it's like shooting a fish on a webalwabal board doing 25mph." Also, informing us that they had missed a few and seen over 40 sharks. So, at this point I was still dumbfounded on how can someone couldn't hit a 6 foot shark that was right next to the boat!

Thursday night we put the boat in and the water was glass. In the bay thinking to myself, wow this is going to be fun. After getting about 9 miles out things started to change. Outside the bay the waves were 6+ foot rollers. Around this time we were informed on how we were going to do the hunt. We were told that the sharks hate the boat and run from it so, we would have to go fast. Well, I dont know if you ever been in a 21 foot boat going 25+ m.p.h with 6+ foot waves, but it is absolutly insane to say the least! We started running this long strip of 8 foot water looking for sharks. As the boat was jumping these 6 foot waves, we were not only trying to hold on for dear life, but also trying to hold on to our bows. We spotted our first shark as it seemed this guy was doing 60mph on this flat we turned the boat to get on him and he darted back toward the boat. At that point we all shot and missed. My breath was tooken away by the adrenalin. We continued to run the beach and flats seeing around 40 sharks. After about 20 shots I was staring to think this is impossible. We were in the last 30 minutes of our first night out when we started back to a point where we had seen a few about a hour before. At that moment is when i heard SHARK!! This shark came flying up next to the boat. I seen my buddy take a shot right over him he darted back at the boat perfectly. My "American Eagle" bow released my "Muzzy Mag" off my "Quick Draw" rest into the water, I felt sick. I thought I missed again. I then seen my line straighten out. In less then 1 sec my 60 yards of line was ripped out of my ,AMS" bottle and the float went screaming off my bow. "I hit one"!!!

I have hunted many thing across the USA and have took many trophy animals in my lifetime. My adrenalin has never rushed like this before. As we chased the float trying to hook a bigger float to it, the shark was going for deep water at one point we thought we may have lost him when he went deep. The float came back up 20 yards away and we were back on him. Ater letting him tire out, we got him up near the boat for a second arrow. As I drilled him with the second arrow this guy still had a lot of fight all in all took about 45 min to get him into the boat. I knew then, had my trophy!!

Shark hunt BY Tara Griffion

A shark hunt was the last thing I ever expected to encounter in my lifetime. AmericanBowfishing.com gave me an opportunity to have the most extreme bowfishing experience. This was the most intense occasion out bowfishing yet. I have hunted a lot of species before, but nothing like this!

Our charter boat took us about 12 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico. We were told to gear up and get ready. My mindset was to see a shark and shoot it just like any other time out on the water. I never expected to be in six foot rollers going 25 miles per hour chasing these Blacktip along the sand bars! The first night out was awesome. We saw about forty sharks , I was able to take about twenty shots on several of them. These sharks move extremely fast and are terrified of the boat. You only see them for a quick second. Like I said, the water was quite choppy and even felt a little eerie. At any time I thought I was going to fly off the boat. You literally were holding on with one hand (white-knuckled) in the other hand I was gripping my American Eagle bow. Keeping my eyes peeled, I continued taking shots at these Blacktips, but never had a kill.

I did not end up with a shark in the boat the first night, but that didn't stop me for our second night out. I was fully rested, energized and felt really good about being on the water that night. As we cruised out of the channel in to the Gulf, we had several dolphins swimming next to the boat. Lightning strikes in the distance made a beautiful scenery. As I geared up my American Eagle with my AMS big game retriever and slid my Muzzy arrow onto my Quick-Draw rest, I felt ready! We were on the open water for about five minutes before I shot my first arrow way over top of the shark. I knew what I needed to do at this point and that was to step up my game and kill one of the bad boys! I was the only girl in the group of seven. I really wanted to one up all of them and prove not only to myself, but them too that I could do this. In a single moment of taking all of the beauty, intense feelings and magnificent power these mammals hold, the two guys up front yelled "SHARK"!!! They both took a shot and missed. It was out of my sight for about 10 seconds and decided to dart in my direction. As I pulled back my bow and shot, something felt right. Sure enough, I saw my line flatten out and I felt my big game float slide off into the water! It happened so fast and smooth! I felt my stomach drop and felt instant adrenaline racing through my veins. All I could hear was a muffled sound of everyone yelling and cheering for me. I was so overly excited and beyond thrilled! I had just shot a shark!!! Not only did I shoot it, I was the first girl to take a Blacktip Shark while bowfishing. As we got him close to the boat and I saw my arrow stuck in him I still couldn't believe it! We had him in the boat and I couldn't be more proud of this amazing opportunity and achievement.
